Gang related fighting broke out in prestigious Winston Churchill High School in Potomac. On washingtonpost.com an article titled "Brawl Prompts Restrictions", school authorities have decided to ban certain types of clothing and items associated with gangs. The ban would include bandannas, hoods, skullcaps, and do-rags.
The fight on Wednesday involved six male students who began arguing about 11:30 a.m. inside the school at 11300 Gainsborough Rd., police said. The two groups had quarreled before. As the dispute escalated, the students took the fight outside, prompting spectators to tag along.
A security staff member was injured during the fracas.
Principal Joan C. Benz said that the school had taken measures to prevent the violence and that the students involved had been causing trouble for a couple of months. Some had been suspended for "intimidating behaviors, abusive language, and fighting". Four of the students are known gang members.
On Nov. 14, the school held a meeting attended by the students, their parents and four members of the police department, including one gang investigator.
In all, five male students were charged as juveniles in connection with the violence. At least four of the students faced a 10 day suspension.
The consequences don't seem that bad. I can just hear the complaints now. "Oh, no, I can't wear my do-rag to school."
This might be another reason to go for school uniforms.
