Timely Teacher Talk

More snow in Texas

As a native Texan, I am not overly fond of snow.  I enjoy it every now and then, but enough of the white stuff is enough.

This weather reminds me of the time that we were stranded in North Carolina (Blowing Rock) because of a huge snow storm that seemed to come out of nowhere and pummel everything in sight.  Our family had traveled to a little mountain top and stayed with an older couple in their home during spring break.  The kids were skiing on blown-in snow when this real white stuff just landed on us.  Maybe it didn't like the imposter snow.:)  We were stuck, and our hosts didn't seem all that happy about it.  We had to forage in their little refrigerator freezer, and the pickins' were bad.  We still talk about the green roast beef.  Also, we all became stir crazy, and sadly, the couple took us off of their Christmas card list after that.

I had to call my best friend and tell her that I would not be returning to work on Monday.  I had NO lesson plans in place as I had taken it for granted that I would be the one teaching the class after spring break and could pretty much wing it.   I wound up missing three days of school, but my friend put on her cape and saved the day.  Always have a good friend at work!

Lesson learned:  Always leave back up lesson plans on your desk.  Keep them up to date.  Have enough stuff for a week.

Isn't it interesting that we are the one job where you cannot just be gone?  We must plan for our own replacement and the work for the replacement to do.  And then when we return, we must keep going, plan more, and correct what was done while we were gone.  Madness.

It is interesting.  I still have dreams about not being prepared, kind of like those college dreams people have.  Last night I dreamed about an evaluation.  Also, for some reason I keep dreaming about a second grade class where I taught everything but math. I just left it out and then worried that the teachers the next year would notice that the kids had not learned their math. I'm not sure why I keep dreaming that but feel that the constant pressure that teachers have has something to do with it.
