What the possum must have thought

My knowledge of science, or shall I say lack of knowledge, prompted me to yell out in a meeting when I looked out a glass door and found a cute little creature staring at me.  I was sitting with a group of adults and was probably the oldest person in the room.  I was truly delighted to see the animal and felt that everyone else would want to see him too.  Luckily, the meeting hadn't officially started, but I immediately felt like an unruly third grader.

I wasn't even sure what it was.  I've never come face to face with a possum before.  My excitement wasn't shared by the rest of the group.  They called the creature nasty and not so cute.  The person in charge contacted maintenance to come and remove the unwanted possum from the grounds.

Of course, I would have reacted differently if I had been outside without a protective barrier.  The possum's tail must have been about two feet long and looked a lot like a rat's tail. Although this one looked sweet to me, it probably had some pretty sharp teeth and a mean bite to match.

The whole experience reminds me of the spontaneous enthusiasm of small children.  They hold nothing back and don't worry about how others might perceive their reactions.  I also thought about how it feels to not fit in and be the one looking in from the outside.  The poor possum was probably as shocked and surprised as I was.  At least he didn't embarrass himself in front of his peers.

There's a writing prompt in there someplace.:)

Hi Betty,

I wanted to thank you for joining opensourcereading.com. I really enjoy your blog and am honored that you chose to jump on board.

I loved this story. This reminds me of the feeling I get whenever I enter Disney World. For a moment, I am a little kid again. It is a feeling that stays with me from one visit to the next, and it is a feeling that I try to bring out in my children when I am planning a particularly fun lesson. Of course, that feeling of wonder often happens when you least expect it...such as when we found deer footprints in the sand last week.

It makes me wonder where the expression "playing possum" was originally used.  Any ideas?

I know that the original word was O'possum.  I know that when they are threatened, they pretend to be dead by lying very still.  My Mom used to tell us we were playing possum when we pretended to be asleep.  I have seen people actually pick up a possum who was playing possum.  It is a dangerous thing to do.

Mu husband tells me that possums don't play dead on purpose.  They go into shock when stressed and faint which makes them appear to be dead.  I always thought possums acted this way to protect themselves from prey.

Silly me.  I'm not sure what the expression means however.

Directly outside of the artroom window is a beautiful Maple tree nestled in our school's courtyard. One beautiful fall morning the third graders came in... peered out into the sun dappled yard as the golden colored leaves cascaded down... only to discover...

...2 squirrels doing the nasty 10 feet our window sill. And these were some Playboy squirrels. They were enacting fantasies and crap. Can I get some CURTAINS?

Eeeeeeeewwww...when we were on vacation at the beach last summer, my daughter and I decided to go for a late evening ice cream cone. We got there after the place on the boardwalk was closed, but we weren't alone...guess who was rummaging through the trash? And THAT possum WAS NOT cute!

There's a British stand up comedian/ne called Dame Edna Everage and she calls her audience and guests 'possums'. I wonder why. :)
