My feet hurt

Today was my first day to substitute, and I am so tired that I just came home and crashed.  It's a good tired, and I really loved being back in the classroom again.  It's a lot different from being the real classroom teacher.  I think it will take me a while to get the hang of things.

Before I retired, I was used to being part of a group and knowing all of the inner workings of a rather tough middle school.  Now I feel like an outsider because I don't know any of the other teachers or staff members.  I wonder if being a sub is a lonely job.

Regardless of going into new territory, I really had a great time with the kids and look forward to my next adventure.  One thing is very similar to my days as a regular classroom teacher.  My feet hurt.:(

yes it is lonely. Til you are "always" in a building that is..then the other teachers recognize you and then you build a relationship with them. It's pretty neat when the kids recognize you too & almost remember your name :-)

I did it for 2 years in 2 school districts. great training in functioning even though you don't know what's going on (pre announced fire drills, assemblies everyone forgot to tell you about

Enjoy...your can't be bored because it's never the same every day.

Love your blog. I taught middle school Spanish for 13 years now I'm home with kids. I've considered going back as a sub, but not quite yet as my youngest is 16 months. I remember how bad my feet hurt (mainly because I have rheumatoid arthritis) so I turned my need for comfy, cute shoes into a blog! Will be back to visit--do you have a twitter account?

Betty, I feel your pain -- literally.  I was just complaining to my husband about my aching feet!  I always forget how physically demanding our job is...

By the day's end I find myself tired of talking, tired of standing, even tired of thinking!

I imagine that the life of a sub is a lonely one.  I know that our campus is so busy that the substitutes are expected to figure it out on their own.  Yes, we have buddy teachers and all that good stuff designed to help substitutes, but I know they often go underappreciated!

I totally feel the same way at the end of the day.  Exhausted!!!! Some of my friends with desk jobs go out on weeknights to happy hours and I go to sleep!  On Friday nights I'm lucky if I can make it half-way through a movie.

Yes, it can be lonely until you have subbed at the same school for a while. It was my experience when I was a substitute that you must approach other teachers to get acquainted. They will tend not to be the first to introduce themselves. Go to the teacher's lunchroom and ask to dine with those teachers present. A simple, "may I sit here" usually suffices.

The tradeoff is you don't have to take anything home.

Hopefully you will find a school that calls you a lot.  My husband is practically a full time staff member because he subs in the building so much!  When I was a sub, I was lonely, but I was too shy to start conversations with other teachers.

I have always thought that should I sub after I leave teaching, I would like to be at one school and sub for one or two departments.  We have a sub like that.  She will only work for our department or for teachers we recommend.  She has been burned too many times with bad teachers who forget to leave lesson plans or whose kids have not been trained.
