A district in Texas has enlisted the help of some students in reducing electricity costs. If a staff member leaves a light or television on when she leaves her room, she might return to find she has been ticketed.
The "green teams" in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch school district regularly patrol the halls to remind teachers to turn off lights, projectors and televisions when no one is in the classroom.
These teams are an integral part of the school district's effort to save money through energy conservation.
Blair special education teacher Alicia Pham directs the school's program and regularly takes her students on patrol.
I'm sure that a lot of schools are on the "green" bandwagon. I grew up in a family that was green before green was popular. During the winter, my dad would close us between the front door and the screen door if we didn't exit fast enough. I remember studying in the living room while wearing a coat. Sixty degrees was "good enough for anybody." The thought of leaving a light on was out of the question.
Having a cooperative spirit about saving energy is awesome. Maybe school districts could share ideas with each other. I'm sure there are a lot of old timers out there that would love to put in their two cents.
