Too much information

Some of the shows on television are creeping me out, so the writers' strike doesn't really bother me.  I am not talking about the late night shows that are immediately feeling the pinch.  I am referring to some of the weekly shows that are just plain creepy and show things that people really don't need to see.   In the past, parents had to worry about some of the sitcoms being a little racy.   Now sitcoms are more than a little racy, and some of the other hour long shows scare me so much that I can't watch them.  Today when The Andy Griffith Show came on (talk about rerunning reruns), I started thinking about how innocent shows used to be.  The Waltons was another show that we used to watch.  Parents didn't have to worry about covering their children's eyes and ears or pushing the mute or fast forward button.  "Goodnight John Boy" became a popular comment in a lot of families.  We still say it every now and then.

Back to the writers' strike.  Maybe this time period without updated shows can help families get away from their television sets and get involved in activities that are more active and not so depressing.  Some of the popular shows are just plain gruesome and can't be good for anybody.  In my opinion, they are just nightmares waiting to happen.  So, instead of parking in front of the screen, perhaps a game of Monopoly or a family walk could be in order.

I agree with you.  Those shows are terrible for little kids.  I admit I do watch them.  I was a nurse before I was a teacher and I enjoy mysteries.  However, I would never have let my girls watch those kinds of shows.  It would have given them nightmares.  I am shocked that we have gotten so cold in our viewing choices.  I too would like to go back to more peaceful times.  It is time for the viewing public to stand up and tell the TV show makers that they have stepped over the line.  They scarey shows can be put on TV after 10:00 pm.

Shows today are outrageous. However, whether teachers or parents like it, children are watching most of these shows on television. 'Reality' type of shows seem to be a great hype. Since most of the reality being shown on t.v is out of control, youth are drawn to these shows because of the 'real stuff' that is shown. However, most of the 'real stuff' is scripted and is purposely shown to draw ratings and audiences. I think it is imperative to inform the youth of today that these shows are meant for the ratings, the popular contest and obviously for the money.
