How many AP courses are enough?

Have students gone AP Happy?  Are they racking up too many AP Courses?  On washingtonpost.com, the issue of too much AP was brought up in the annual AP report to the nation.

How many Advanced Placement courses are too many? Here in the Washington area hotbed of AP mania, the College Board today for the first time provided an answer that could be interpreted like this: if you have hit the half dozen mark, you might be just showing off.

Trevor Packer, executive director of the AP program, said he had spoken to many college officials about how many of the college-level courses were enough to impress admissions officers and prepare for the rigors of higher education. They told him that "three, four or five AP courses are sufficient," he said. "Beyond that, they are interested in seeing students participate in other activities."

It seems like a nice balance to me.  In this competitive world, however, I wonder how many students will actually limit the number of AP courses they are able to take.
