National Handwriting Day

Does Hallmark know that January 23rd is a special day?  I have never seen a card for National Handwriting Day.  Perhaps you are supposed to take a pencil or pen in hand and design your own!  No, it's not a stay in bed and relax kind of day.  It's a day to ignore your computer and cell phone and communicate the old fashioned way.

According to an editorial by Dennis Baron on latimes.com, there is also a group called WIMA.  WIMA stands for the Writing Implement Manufacturers Association.  Of course, this group is going to encourage handwriting.  We're talking job security here.

I do like the idea of a National Handwriting Day.  There could be competitions for most unusual writing instruments.  This might be the day where it's okay to bring a pencil to school that has a whistle or action figure on the top.  Okay, maybe not the whistle.  Teachers could get into the swing of things and bring their own collections of pens and pencils to school.  I know that I can't look at an attractive display of pens and pencils without buying one.  What about those souvenir shops?  They always have cool pens and pencils for sale.  Some come with their own termites.

Should we buy people pens and pencils for this day?  That would certainly make WIMA happy.   What about decorations?  Most teachers have at least one big pencil displayed somewhere in their classrooms.  I like this holiday.  It makes me want to shop.
